For years. Ever since I was young I wanted to draw. I remember one time I saw a friends drawing and though I wish I could draw that good. Then I must have thought you could never draw anything like that. You can’t draw.
So I very rarely picked up a pen or a pencil and drew. I thought that some people could draw. And there were people like me who could not draw.
Back in 2010 i drew probably everyday for several months. And up to that point that was not most sustained period of my ever having drawn.. Then I gave up drawing for about 3 years. I probably figured I was not good enough to draw.
So I had to have a sketchbook. I had wanted one for awhile. Then I got one. And I drew in it. And since 2013 I have been drawing sometimes everyday. Though there have been weeks or month in that period that I never touched a sketchbook to draw in it.
Now I am back to drawing more like sketching everyday. I hope I keep it up.
One tip that I really like was in a book I read about a storyboard artist for movies. He said to practice drawing you can take tracing paper and put it over say a picture in a magazine and trace the picture.
He also said you could practice by using a computer and tracing over images on the computer.
I thought that was the greatest drawing tip I had ever read. Place tracing paper over a picture and trace it. Its sure a lot more fun to practice than sitting there and trying to draw a object freehand and ending up with a lamp that looks like a television.
Even in my younger days I remember tracing with tracing paper. I am sure I would be a better artist now if I would have known that sure go ahead a practice drawing by tracing over objects in pictures. Then once I got enough practice tracing I am sure I would be able to draw the object free hand.
